10. Ripper-Encoders

These tools will extract CDDA and convert it to MP3 or Ogg format. Some are command-line based some are GUI based.

10.1 abcde

abcde is a frontend to cdparanoia, wget, cd-discid, id3, and your favorite Ogg/MP3 encoder (Oggenc is the default). It grabs an entire CD and converts each track to Ogg/MP3, then comments or ID3-tags each file, all with one command. It supports parallelization, SMP, HTTP proxies, customizable filename organization and munging, playlist generation, and remote distributed encoding via distmp3.

10.2 Korbis

Korbis has two aims. The first is to make ripping CD's to Ogg Vorbis files easier, and the second is to provide an introduction to the beginning KDE programmer. Korbis provides a GUI interface to the CDParanoia and OggEnc programs, and thus requires them. At the present time, Korbis collects song/track/etc data into pre-defined fields, and passes those arguments to CdParanoia and Oggenc.

10.3 RipEnc

This script supports cdparanoia, cdda2wav, tosha, and dagrab for ripping and bladeenc, 8hz-mp3, l3enc, xingmp3enc, lame, and mp3enc for encoding. RIPENC also utilizes CDDB lookups to name the songs as they are ripped. Cda, which is included in the XMCD package, must be used if you wish to utilize CDDB naming. A manual naming option is also available.

10.5 RipperX

RipperX is a GTK program to rip CD audio and encode mp3 and Ogg. It has plugins for CDParanoia, BladeEnc, Lame Mp3 encoder, XingMp3enc, 8hz-mp3 and the ISO v2 encoder. It also has support for CDDB and ID3 tags.

10.6 Grip

Grip is a GTK-based CD-player and CD-ripper/Ogg/MP3-encoder. It has the ripping capabilities of cdparanoia built in, but can also use external rippers (such as cdda2wav). It also provides an automated frontend for MP3 encoders, letting you take a disc and transform it easily straight into MP3s. The CDDB protocol is supported for retrieving track information from disc database servers. Grip works with DigitalDJ to provide a unified "computerized" version of your music collection.
